Pentiment Series #8
This iteration of the Pentiment Series presents highly personalized takes on the jazz tradition.
Featuring:
Jon Elbaz – Solo Piano
Jon Elbaz is a pianist and composer from New Jersey. His early exposure to music was through his mother’s CD compilations of Erroll Garner, Jobim, and Frederic Chopin, among many others. While attending New England Conservatory he spent a substantial number of hours searching for confluences between the ethereal mystery of Alexander Scriabin, the intensity and power of John Coltrane, and the perceivable gradations of speed present in rhythmic ratios. This investigation continues in his compositional and ensemble approach, which has since incorporated interest in the 20th century’s written structures and systems, as well as its many pioneers of improvisation and creative thinking. Part of his ongoing study is developing a language for solo piano performance that focuses on different phrases occurring simultaneously.

The Shane Simpson Current

The Shane Simpson Current treats the jazz piano trio as a flexible, exploratory format, drawing on a wide range of influences, from minimalist concepts and dance loops to contrapuntal textures and lyrical songwriting. Balancing formal rigor with spontaneity, Simpson’s compositions are marked by structural experimentation, rhythmic play, and stylistic juxtaposition. Though rooted in playfulness, the music sometimes touches on somber or reflective moods, often with irony still quietly in play.

The Endangered Quartet came into being through friendships that developed between musicians over a course of years, playing songs and sharing ideas outside of the context of the existing projects they were currently engaged in. They have developed this new quartet sound, a diverse chamber music blending classical, jazz, rock, and folk idioms. A collective of composers, they are committed to a vision of honest and soulful expression — endangered but essential human values.
