The Mermaid Show

In celebration of the Coney Island Mermaid Parade, Carri Skoczek brings the sixth annual Mermaid Show to the Williamsburg Art & Historical Center. Over 30 artists will be participating in this years exhibition. In the spirit of the parade, the work will range from political to hilarious.

Highlights of the exhibition: Marie Roberts, Coney Island’s very own sideshow banner painter will be creating the annual mermaid banner; Kei Andersen’s school of fish; Ursula Clark’s mermaid menage a trois; Richard Brachman’s candy mermaid; Bambi the mermaid’s self-portrait as the infamous Fiji Island mermaid; Takashi Yamada’s mermaids painted on horseshoe crab shells; Toni Lee Sangastino & Yo Eui Joo’s sideshow banners, Carri Skoczek’s soft sculpture mermaid show mascots: The East River Mermaid and Nyack Neptune; and Janet Ziff’s homage to Diane Sbano’s mermaid scultures.

In the side gallery, a memorial exhibition for Diane Sbano will take place. Diane was a participant in the Mermaid shows from the very beginning. She will be greatly missed this year, but her spirit lives in in her work and will be celebrated in this very special exhibition.
