The WAH Center is sponsoring the DOJO
BAND in a concert of music written especially for this event
by members of the ensemble. This concert will include its founder,
Joseph Jarman on reeds, director Chris Chalfant on piano and
vocals, Jessica Jones on reeds and Tony Jones on reeds.
Jarman conceived of this group several years ago, as an outlet
for the many musicians who belonged to Jarman's Jikishinkan
Dojo and Brooklyn Buddhist Association. They believed that the
commonality of spiritual philosophy would foster an organic
growth of creative music making. Thus the DOJO BAND was born
in 1998. The group expands musically based on what each member
brings to it thorough their compositions and improvisations.
Their diverse background allows for a wide range of musical
exploration and their sense of commitment and beauty creates
a lyrical, unified and dynamic sound.
