Dear Friends, We’re excited to invite you to the Pentiment Series II, our newly created music program, this Friday, January 17 at 8:00pm (doors open at 7:00pm). Join us at the beautiful and historic WAH Center for this monthly series showcasing genre defying artists from all corners of the creative, and improvised music world! The mission of this innovative series is to foster a contemporary audience for live performance through unique and thoughtful programming. Featuring: Brittany Karlson Brittany Karlson is a multifaceted artist, who has her musical roots in jazz, American old time and bluegrass, and improvised music. She regularly performs across the USA, Canada, and Europe in several ensemble settings, including Letter Castle and The Goodbye Girls. Karlson’s original songs are showcased under the moniker Karl. Another solo project involving the use of puppets from behind her bass, highlights her sensibilities concerning the absurd, comedic, and serious, all at once. Her love of crafts has seen the creation of a series of finger puppets, collage works, and a running series of calendars featuring sock puppets. Anthony Coleman & Sam Newsome Anthony Coleman is a composer, improvising keyboardist and teacher, born in New York City on August 30th, 1955. Coleman has toured and recorded with John Zorn, Elliott Sharp, Marc Ribot, Shelley Hirsch, Roy Nathanson and many others. Coleman is currently on faculty at Mannes College the New School for Music and the New England Conservatory. Sam Newsome stands as a multifaceted figure in the world of jazz—a saxophonist, music professor, and accomplished writer. In 2023, his artistic endeavors manifested in two duo recordings: Soprano-Logues, a collaborative effort with saxophonist Dave Liebman, and Cosmic Unconsciousness Unplugged, where he joined forces with pianist Jean-Michel Pilc. Newsome’s avant-garde approach, particularly in the realm of prepared saxophone, has positioned him as a sought-after player in New York’s improvised music scene. His innovative voice has resonated in collaborations with notable artists such as Elliot Sharpe, William Parker, Fay Victor, Daniel Carter, Joe Morris, and Dave Liebman. Leo Hardman-Hill Large Ensemble Leo Hardman-Hill is a composer, multi-instrumentalist and performance maker. He received his BM in Contemporary Improvisation from the New England Conservatory and an MA in Performance Making from Goldsmiths, University of London. His work explores the performative in music and the musical in performance, with a particular focus on rhythm and signification. He has performed at various venues and festivals around New York including The Stone, MoMA PS1, The Brick, Miriam Gallery, The Flea Theater and The Festival of New Trumpet Music. In addition, he has performed internationally at The Gateshead International Jazz Festival, Jazzfest Munchen and The Camden People’s Theatre. Most recently, he has worked on several multimedia scores, including Waiter Movie, a film by Edy Modica (Jury Duty).
