Dear Artists and Friends,

The original “Detritus” show dates were Oct.13 – Nov. 16, 2024, and the submission date was Sept. 30. We have received some interesting works from some artists. They responded to our first Open Call Announcement dated Sept. 3rd.

However, when I sent you another email dated Sept. 22, I noticed that the number of artists who submitted their materials was much smaller than anticipated. I wanted to know why. So, I called one artist, and her answer was that her husband had sent his submission materials to the specific gmail account. I looked for his material, but none was found. She told me her husband had sent his materials to the wrong email address at detritus@gmail.com, while the correct email address should have been detrituswah@gmail.com. No wonder his materials did not reach us. This explained why the number of the applicants this time was drastically small. Many more artists must have submitted but none of them reached us.

This has created a big headache for us. I had to send a REVISED OPEN CALL to everybody to explain the situation and ask them to resend their materials to our correct gmail address, detrituswah@gmail.com

In order to straighten up this confusion, we need to delay the Show Dates, the Opening Date, Submission Deadline, Delivery Dates.

We delayed the show dates to Sunday Oct. 27, very close to the Halloween on Oct. 31. So, why not have a fun “Pre-Halloween Reception” where everybody comes in the Halloween Costumes, either in Vintage Clothing, or in Cheerful Halloween Costumes on the opening day, Sun, Oct. 27, 3-5pm.

Submission Fee:

2) Artwork Images, limited to 3 pieces, in high resolution, printable and big size images
3) Resume (in chronological order) and Statement combined together within 600 words
4) Send submission materials including a $50 entry fee, the complete entry form, high resolution LARGE image of your work, you resume & statement (combined within 600 words to: detrituswah@gmail.com

“One Man’s Trash is Another Man’s Treasures”: Detritus/Recycling/Found Objects

It is important for us to know what we have always taken for granted in those materials that we believe they to be eternally available for us, but if we mistreat mother nature, those common products of nature won’t be available in the future. In fact we are creating trash from what nature gives us to live. We need to be humble and appreciate and not waste these precious materials.

And it is also important for us to know the fact that while the world population has been increasing every year, the products of mother nature have been decreasing faster than we realized. The question is, how do we preserve the products of Nature so that we humans can share the limited resources and live together on this small planet of Earth harmoniously, peacefully and happily. This is the one of the most critical challenges we are facing today.

So, the upcoming show in October is “One Man’s’ Trash Is Another Man’s Treasure!”

The materials used to create the artworks must be found from trash cans or whatever is thrown out  as useless. The artists should not or not be allowed to buy any materials to create their works. Of course you can use glue, screws, nails, string etc. to  hold the work together.

We want to see how artists can apply their creativity to invent or make something extraordinary as artworks or objects. 

We must save the products of mother nature in our own small private lives, and our good intended efforts will eventually spread widely, reaching to the other side of our own time, here and now. 

When a small pebble is thrown in the lake it makes waves, eventually reaching to the other side of the lake.
