As LGBTQ rights have progressed monumentally in the past few years, culminating with the legalization of same-sex marriage nationwide this past June, we look to the artistic responses to and celebrations of these progressive moments in our history. This upcoming October, the WAH Center (Williamsburg Art and Historical Center) will be presenting Queer WAH: Contemporary LGTBQ Artists. We are inviting artists whom inhabit all areas of the queer spectrum, whether they identify as gay/lesbian, transgender, intersex, or non-normative, to submit works in an exhibition aimed at examining and celebrating the contributions of queer artists to the contemporary art landscape.
We seek to not define, but enumerate on the meaning of “queer” in all of its forms, interpretations, variants, and rejections. Queer WAH is a dialogue of what it means to claim a queer identity in contemporary culture, as well as an examination of a spectrum of identities, each with a unique and specific history that is complicated, enhanced, and altered by intersections of race, sexuality, and gender. We seek to give voice to the marginalized populations that were silenced or disenfranchised, and in many cases still are, and temper our progress with the reminder of those whom we are leaving behind as a movement.
The WAH Center presents Queer WAH – a multi-media group exhibition dedicated to presenting the work of artists exploring queer identities. The WAH Center is a not-for-profit art and historical center in Williamsburg, Brooklyn that seeks to emulate WAH Center Founder & Artistic Director Yuko Nii’s Bridge concept in which artists are varying nationalities, identities, and styles are connected. Artists are encouraged to submit artworks in the medium of their choosing, including two-dimensional works (painting, drawing. watercolor, printmaking, photography, etc), three-dimensional works (sculpture including craft such as glass, ceramic, weaving, furniture, etc), video/film, and installation.
