HIGHLIGHTS OF 1998-99
HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!
November 10th 1999 was the 3nd anniversary of the WAH Center! With the hard work of those who have volunteered their talents and time, we believe we have made contributions to our community in Brooklyn and New York City far beyond what could have been expected by virtue of our monetary resources. We have launched over thirty major art exhibits of high quality, many performances of music, dance, theater, poetry readings, staged readings, story telling and also lectures on the arts. We have annual events such as the January Musical Meltdown, the Springfest, an annual film festival, and fashion shows. In addition to all of these things, we also offer tours of historic Williamsburg three times a year. And we even have an art club, 'The Williamsburg Salon des Artists,' which consists of over two dozen very worthy and highly talented artists. In the past year six bus tour groups visited us from Long Island, Manhattan and Upstate New York. This year on October 16th & 17th we created on behalf of all Williamsburg the WILLIAMSBURG ARTS & CULTURE FESTIVAL to introduce Williamsburg's entire smorgasbord of offerings to the world in one great happening. We had shuttle buses running from Soho to Williamsburg and back. The weekend was highly sucessful with over 50 participating galleries, restarants & local businesses! The New York State Council on the Arts Chairman Richard Schwartz & his wife Shiela paid us a visit & took a walk to see some open studios. The Festival weekend we also opened a new show called APOCALYPSE 1999 with over 125 artist from around the world: Denmark, Japan, Moscow, Ireland, and from throuighout the United States. We also do an annual 'President's Dinner' to honor people who have made outstanding achievements in the arts. Last year our committee chose Bill Bace Bace, Publisher and Editor of REVIEW MAGAZINE, for his notable achievement in producing and sustaining through hard work what is considered by many people to be the foremost vehicle of art criticism and discussion to come out of New York. Governor Pataki even greeted the guests to the dinner by letter congratulating Bill Bace on his achievement. Over the past three years we have had news articles & reviews appear around the world in such papers and magazines as the New York Times, Time Out, the Village Voice, Paper, Asahi Shimbun (one of the largest papers in Japan), and papers in Canada, England, France, Germany, Holland, Italy, Pakistan, Spain, etc., etc.,...and even in REVIEW Magazine twice! Additionally we appeared on TV and video in educational art programs in this country, as well as Germany and Japan. We are pleased to be recognized around the world for our efforts in promoting the arts.
Just recently we were given a total of $35,000 from the NYC Landmark Commission and the Landmark Conservancy to begin emergency work on our facade. We are trying to raise the $2 million dollars needed to bring our magonificent building to a restored condition. We are looking for help in this.
To continue to grow and promote the finest and worthiest new artistic talent and offer the community a place to learn about and enjoy the arts, we need your support. If you are able we would appreciate a contribution to our efforts. Any amount would be greatly appreciated, and you will be able to say that you supported the Center in itís efforts in the emerging art capital of the world, Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
Thank You!
