Alan Bartlett Shepard, Jr. (November 18, 1923 =96 July 21, 1998) was the first American in space. He later commanded the Apollo 14 mission, and was the 5th person to walk on moon. Walter Marty Schirra, Jr. (March 12, 1923 =96 May 3, 2007) was one of the original Mercury 7 astronauts, America's first effort to put humans in space.
